Actor Ewan McGregor recently won the Best Actor in a Superhero Movie award for his acclaimed portrayal of DC’s Black Mask in 2020’s Birds of Prey(and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) at the first-ever Critics’ Choice Super Awards show.
McGregor won the honorary title over fellow nominees Skylar Astin (Secret Society of Second-Born Royals), Jim Carrey (Sonic The Hedgehog), Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Old Guard) and Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog). The inaugural ceremony was held virtually — due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and precautions — on The CW on Jan. 10.
McGregor portrayed Black Mask/Roman Sionis in 2020’s Birds of Prey, a villain who inspired the lethal starring ladies to team up against him as they seek to protect Cassandra Cain. “I want to kill you, because without the Joker around I can,” McGregor’s character famously said in the film to Harley Quinn which prompts Quinn to decide she needs help in defeating him.
McGregor joined co-star Margot Robbie in the winner’s circle as she also took home the Critics’ Choice Super Award for Best Actress in a Superhero movie for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey.
The DC Comic character Black Mask first appeared in 1985’s Batman #386 and was created by Doug Moench and Tom Bandrake. Sionis is known in DC’s Gotham City to be one of the most dangerous criminal masterminds and frequently goes up against the Dark Knight. Similar to Bruce Wayne, the character came from wealth but his dark upbringing led him to become and still be a sinister force in Gotham City, rivaling that of Lex Luther in the criminal underworld and as seen in DC’s Year of the Villain Black Mask #1.
Hosted by Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez, the inaugural Critics’ Choice Super Awards was held on Jan. 10 and celebrated series and films across the Superhero, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, Action and Animation genres. The awards ceremony aired on The CW and will be available to stream for free on The CW app and cwtv.com starting Jan. 11.
Directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco and Ewan McGregor.
